"The 2001 summer exhibition at the Kajaani Museum of Fine Art in Finland presents a selection of the work of H.
Ahtela. This was the name under which Einar Reuter worked as an artist. He is
known for his biographic writings about the internationally known painter Helene Schjerfbeck,
whose work he admired. Their correspondence consists of many hundreds of
letters. In the beginning of their acquaintance he accompanied her when she
painted from nature. She had a preference for the human figure and painted many
portraits. He concentrated on the landscape - mainly that in the Kainuu area.
He was actually a forestry officer.
So he knew nature professionally. During
his life he did not get the recognition he deserved. Actually he has
remained in the shadow of more renowned contemporaries. The exhibition focuses
on his close relationship with artist Helene Schjerfbeck. Accompanying the exhibition an excellent book has been published

The painting of Ahtela made an everlasting
impression on me as one of the forgotten artists of the twentieth century. Had
he worked in one of the world's centers of art, he would have certainly received
much greater attention than he did in his homeland - Finland. His earlier work
echoed the styles of the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the
twentieth century - from Georges Seurat through André Derain. He soon developed
a very own approach.
